Privacy Policy

Your trip data stays on your devices and in iCloud

Farekeep has no servers, no accounts, no analytics, no ads and no third-party SDKs. This policy explains what the app handles, why, who can see it, and how to delete it.

Effective 27 October 2026

01Data we collect and how

Farekeep only stores information that you or other members of your trip enter or choose to attach in the app:

Names
A display name for each trip member, typed in by a user. This can include people who don’t use Farekeep. No phone numbers, email addresses or contacts are stored.
Expenses and balances
Trip names and dates, amounts, currencies, exchange rates, dates, merchants, categories, who paid, how costs were split, and payments marked as paid.
Photos and receipts
Receipt photos taken with the camera, screenshots you pick with Apple’s photo picker, or PDF receipts you choose from the Files app. The app only gets the images and files you choose, never your whole library. For a PDF, your iPhone joins its pages into a single picture and keeps only that picture; the PDF itself is not stored or uploaded.
Your name
If you set “Your name” in Farekeep Settings, it is stored in your private iCloud and shown on your seat in the trips you belong to.
iCloud user identifier
When you take a seat in a trip, or create one, Farekeep records your CloudKit user record name (an identifier Apple assigns to your iCloud account) on that seat. It syncs to the other members of the trip so each device can tell which seat is whose. It does not include your Apple Account email or name.
Diagnostics
If you’ve turned on “Share With App Developers” in iOS settings, Apple may make anonymous crash reports available to us. Farekeep itself does not collect crash reports and has no analytics.

Farekeep does not collect location, contacts, advertising identifiers or any bank, card or payment details, and it does not track you. Receipt photos and screenshots you add may show whatever is on them, so crop out anything you do not want stored and shared.

02How it’s used

  • To record trip expenses, work out balances and suggest who should pay whom.
  • To read the amount, currency, date and merchant from photos. This text recognition runs entirely on your iPhone; images are never sent anywhere to be read. The raw text is discarded once you confirm the values.
  • To sync trips between your devices and with the people you invite.
  • To show alerts. If you allow notifications, Farekeep creates alerts on your iPhone when other members change a shared trip. Alerts are generated on your device after iCloud sync; no Farekeep server or third party is involved. An alert can show a member’s name and the expense description, and shows an amount only if you choose that in Farekeep Settings. You choose which alerts you get, what the lock screen shows, and which trips are muted.

Your data is not used for advertising or profiling.

03Sharing and third parties

  • Apple iCloud. Trips are stored and synced with Apple’s CloudKit, in the iCloud account of the person who created the trip. We have no access to this data. Names, amounts and notes are stored in encrypted fields and photos as encrypted files. Apple protects this data under the Apple Privacy Policy, which provides the same or greater protection than this policy.
  • People you invite. When you share a trip, everyone in it can see and edit all of its contents, including photos. Use the crop step to remove anything you don’t want them to see, such as bank balances.
  • No one else. We don’t sell, rent or share data with any other third party.

04Retention and deletion

Your data is kept until you delete it. Because it lives on your devices and in iCloud rather than with us, you delete it directly in the app:

  • Delete an expense to remove it and its photos from your device and from iCloud.
  • Delete a trip to remove it for every member. When the trip organiser deletes it, the trip is removed from iCloud. A trip admin who is not the organiser can also delete it: it disappears from every member’s device straight away, but the copy held in the organiser’s iCloud (photos included) is only removed the next time the organiser’s device opens Farekeep, and stays in their iCloud storage until then.
  • Leave a trip (members who joined someone else’s trip) to remove it from your devices using this Apple Account. Everyone else keeps the trip, and your expenses stay on it under your seat’s name.
  • Remove a member (trip organiser) to take away their access. Their name and expenses stay on the trip for the others.
  • Deleting the app removes the copy on your device. Your trips remain in iCloud, and shared trips remain available to other members. Delete or leave your trips in the app first if you want them gone.
